ABOUT ASHRAE Society
What is ASHRAE?
ASHRAE is the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), founded in 1894, is a global society seeking to advance heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems design and construction. ASHRAE has over 50,000 members in more than 130 countries worldwide.
ASHRAE’s members are composed of building services engineers, architects, mechanical contractors, building owners, equipment manufacturers’ employees, and others concerned with the design and construction of HVAC&R systems in buildings. The society funds research projects, offers continuing education programs, and develops and publishes technical standards to improve building services engineering, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and sustainable development.
ASHRAE also publishes a set of handbooks, standards and guidelines relating to HVAC systems and issues, that are often referenced in building codes and used by consulting engineers, mechanical contractors, architects, and government agencies. These standards are periodically reviewed, revised and republished.
Through global collaboration, research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s built environment today.

ASHRAE REGION II By the Numbers
Creating a healthy and sustainable built environment for all.
Our Vision
A healthy and sustainable built environment for all
We share ASHRAE Society’s Vision of a healthy and sustainable built environment for all. There is a growing awareness of the environmental, social and economic impacts of buildings, including effects on ecosystem sustainability and the well-being of building occupants. Considering that Canadians spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, this highlights the impact buildings can have on our local population. We are focused on realizing a healthy and sustainable built environment for all both locally and the markets our members serve.
Our Mision
To serve our members based in Hamilton-Burlington, Brantford, Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Niagara Region and the stakeholders they serve by advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and their allied fields
We will be the local leader in guiding and shaping the built environment for the advancement of human wellbeing through. We will lead in providing unbiased education, fostering strong professional relationships, promoting industry research, and inspiring students to be interested in building design & construction.
Our Strategy
(3 Year Strategic Plan)
1) Increase the local awareness about ASHRAE, its community, and its technical resources.
Awareness is the first step towards change, growth, and learning. We will promote ASHRAE to the local industry and highlight the resources available to help tackle current building design challenges.
For instance, the pace of change in building design, development, construction, and operation is increasing rapidly, driven by increasing global challenges associated with increasing building-related green house gas (GHG) emissions. By 2030, all new buildings must be built to achieve net zero operational GHG life cycle emissions, with all existing buildings retrofitted to net zero emissions standards by 2050. ASHRAE and its members are working to accelerate innovation, define global best practices, and develop technical guidance, standards, training, and other tools to support building decarbonization while assuring high levels of indoor environmental quality, sustainability, and resilience.
Through our chapter initiatives & events, we will increase the awareness of ASHRAE, create a stronger community, provide education on technical topics, and increase the use of ASHRAE’s technical resources among our members, students, and industry partners.
2) Provide relevant educational opportunities.
Knowledge is power. We will empower our members, students and industry partners by providing efficient and effective transfer of current and relevant information through our technical program. The technical program will be lead by the efforts of the Chapter Technology Transfer Committee consisting of the following: monthly technical presentations, technical tours/field, panel discussions, and CTTC Tech Hours. We will also promote educational resources provided by Society, including: ASHRAE Certifications, ASHRAE ELearning, and other resources.
3) Grow the chapter, committees participation, and initiatives.
There is strength in numbers and many hands make light work. Growth of the chapter is key to its impact and success.
To grow the ASHRAE Hamilton Chapter and increase committee participation, we will focus on building relationships with local businesses and organizations, promoting the benefits of ASHRAE membership and committee involvement, and providing valuable educational opportunities and resources to our members. By fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration among our members and partners, we aim to create a thriving chapter that is recognized as a leader in the HVAC&R industry.
4) Invest in training for members with an interest in chapter leadership.
Leadership is a choice, and great leaders are made, not born. We will invest in training for members with an interest in chapter leadership and build a strong team. By providing mentorship and connecting members with training opportunities, we will help them develop the skills and knowledge they need to become leaders within our chapter and the industry as a whole.
We will also work to identify and develop future leaders within our chapter by networking with students and young professionals. providing mentorship opportunities, leadership training, and other resources that help members build the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.
